Lambeth Country Show 2017

To Brockwell Park last weekend for the 43rd edition of the annual Lambeth Country Show. As well as the music and cider, there were lots of agricultural activities such as the lovely sheep displays featured below.

The entries for the Scarecrow Competition were really good this year. There were lots of children's literature-inspired entrants, with the scary Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Peppa Pig, Dobby from Harry Potter, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and a fantastic Gruffalo.

As most visitors know however, the real action takes place in the Flower Zone and Flower Show tent.

There was lots of last minute primping and preparation to ready creations in all categories for the judging.

There were some beautiful colours and textures on display. All entrants did so well in the floral arrangements.

The fruit and vegetables were also a tribute to the green fingered skills of their respective growers.

The fruits were luscious, and as well as being displayed, were put to good use in jams.

The cake displays were amazing. The decorations were immaculate and inspired.

It was then time to move across to the main event - the vegetable carving!

We started with entrants from the children's competition which were very cute and imaginative, where animals real, and imagined featured heavily.

It was then time to move on to the adults competition which featured a tribute to last weekend's Pride celebrations and the Houses of Parliament...

An unamused Queen...

Hilary Clinton's leaked "pea-mails"...

The Brexit vote...

The Great British Bake Off...

The current screening of Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale...

The Darling Buds of May...

As well as posthumous tributes to Carol Lee Scott aka Grotbags...

and much missed musician Prince, in his "Little Veg Courgette".

And lastly of course, lots of the customary vegetable political likenesses. Lots of Theresa May this year but surprisingly none of the Donald.

I really liked this tribute to the "peaple" of Lambeth. It must have taken absolutely ages to arrange all of those peas.

And lastly the much coveted silverware, that entrants in all categories were fighting for. The Country Show was well attended, and appeared to be a great success despite the overcast weather. Looking forward to next years event already.
